If you’re a snacker like us, you’ll know how tempting it can be to grab for packaged sweet or salty treats when needing a little sustenance between meals. But often these beloved snacks come in single-use plastic packaging. What’s a snack-loving, eco warrior to do?

Since minimising our own single-use plastic consumption, we’ve become more and more creative with snacking, always aiming for satisfying yet healthy, plastic free snacks to keep us going. In this blog we chat about some of our personal and store faves, including recipes of healthy snacks you can make at home yourself!

Everything we mention below can be picked up from GoodFor and kept in brown compostable bags we have available instore, or you might choose to fill a resuable organic cotton bag or glass jar to hold your snacking goods.

Dried Fruit

Dried fruit is convenient and tasty snacking at its finest, ideal for satisfying a sweet tooth. It provides your body with satiating fibre and energising antioxidants. At GoodFor we stock all your classic dried fruits like ApricotDates and Banana Chips, but have also ventured out to include everything from Mango Cheeks to Whole Dried Bananas and Golden Kiwifruit. With a higher sugar and energy content compared to fresh fruit, dried fruit is best snacked on in moderation. Also! Be sure to avoid dried fruit that has been coated with additives like sugar or syrup. Always read the ingredients and nutrition information first.

Fresh Fruit Jazzed Up

Does a piece of fresh fruit alone not quite tantalise your taste buds? How about jazzing up a slice of apple with a slathering of almond butter, or spooning some peanut butter between two slices of banana? You could also dip your fave fresh fruit into melted dark chocolate then top with nuts, seeds or desiccated coconut. YUM! Our favourite thing about jazzing up a slice of fruit is that you can satisfy both your sweet and salty tooth in one tasty snack.

Trail Mixes

Our favourite thing about snacking on trail mixes? The possibilities are endless! With the right ingredient ratio, your trail mix can be brimming with healthy unsaturated fats, protein and fibre. Make your own trail mix at home using an assortment of individual ingredients, or try one of our pre-mixed trail mixes. The Organic 3 O’Clock Energy Mix is a yummy combo of almonds, seeds, dark chocolate drops, coconut chips and dried berries. The Organic Super Hiker Fuel will keep you fuelled with roasted nuts, sunflower seeds, cacao nibs, dark chocolate drops, dried apricots and golden inca berries. What’s your pick?

Tamari Almonds

We absolutely can’t go past Tamari Almonds as a savoury snack. The delightful, nutty yet sweet taste of almonds paired with the savoury and salty flavour of tamari come together to create heaven in a crunchy mouthful. Tamari is gluten-free and naturally fermented to give a full-bodied, non-chemical taste. If these aren’t your thing but you’re still seeking a savoury snack, we also love a handle of Roasted & Salted Almonds, Cashews or Peanuts.

Popcorn

No healthy snacking repertoire is complete without popcorn. Rather than buying by the (plastic) bag, DIY popcorn at home so you can keep it healthy, as well as have free reign over flavours. Whether you’ve got a sweet tooth or are more of a savoury fan, we have three recipes for different popcorn flavours here that can all be whipped up in less than five minutes using our Hawke’s Bay-sourced Organic Popcorn Kernels.
