Role Description
The Produce Manager will support the Store Manager in overseeing and managing the daily retail operations of our store, with a particular focus on the fresh produce section. This role ensures efficient and effective workflows, maintains inventory control, upholds product quality and freshness, supervises the team, and helps deliver an outstanding customer experience. The Produce Manager will also be responsible for ordering, pricing and monitoring fresh produce, running weekly stocktakes and collaborating with suppliers and the broader management team to drive store performance.
This role requires a proactive, organised, and detail-oriented individual with strong leadership skills, excellent problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to delivering exceptional retail management standards. The Produce Manager embodies the employer's mission and values, ensuring the store operates at a world-class level while driving positive cultural influence in the community.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Team Culture:
- Assist in fostering a positive, collaborative, and high-performance culture where each team member recognises their role and is motivated to deliver excellent service.
- Lead by example to ensure all staff feel valued, respect brand standards and contribute proactively to the store’s success.
- Liaise with the Store Manager and broader leadership team to share best practices, drive continuous improvement and support staff development.
Operations & Store Environment:
- Support the daily operations of the store to ensure smooth, efficient workflows and exceptional customer service.
- Ensure that the store environment is clean, organised, visually appealing and aligns with brand standards.
- Maintain operational readiness in all sections, including ensuring that bins, jars and shelving are adequately stocked and presented.
Fresh Produce Section Oversight:
- Take responsibility for the fresh produce section of the store: monitor and maintain product quality and freshness, and ensure compliance with food safety and hygiene standards.
- Oversee chiller management, ensuring all chillers are fully stocked through accurate inventory control, efficient ordering, and close monitoring of best-before dates. Maintain optimal stock rotation, ensure proper product display, and minimise wastage through effective planning and organisation.
- Order fresh produce in line with demand forecasts and store requirements; negotiate and liaise with suppliers to ensure timely delivery and best possible cost-effectiveness.
- Set and review pricing for fresh produce items, balancing margins and market competitiveness, and implement price adjustments as required.
- Run weekly stocktakes specifically for the fresh produce area (and broader store stock when required), analyse variances, and adjust ordering and stocking practices accordingly.
- Monitor product expiration dates, implement first-in-first-out (FIFO) procedures, and minimise wastage through efficient rotation and clearance of ageing stock.
Inventory & Stock Management:
- Assist in submitting purchase orders based on store demand, supplier lead times and promotional forecasts.
- Receive and inspect stock deliveries, identify and report any discrepancies (wrong products, damages, infestations) to suppliers and finance.
- Maintain accurate stock records and help conduct full or partial store stocktakes as scheduled.
- Monitor inventory levels and recommend actions to prevent over-stocking or stock shortages.
Staff Management & Training:
- Support with staff scheduling, training and performance management.
- Assign tasks to team members in the fresh produce section and across the store, monitor execution and ensure standards are met.
Customer Service & Experience:
- Uphold outstanding customer service standards: ensure every customer is greeted, assisted promptly, and has a positive experience.
- Join the customer-facing team during key periods (including the fresh produce area) to assist in enquiries, recommend produce or specials, and resolve complaints or issues.
- Assist in implementing marketing and promotional activities (in-store and fresh produce specific) to attract and retain customers; provide weekly updates to store operators on new produce lines, discontinued items, operational changes and price adjustments.
Financial Oversight & Reporting:
- Support in managing store finances: assist with sales analysis, budgeting input, margin reviews and financial reporting where required.
- Participate in cash-up process as required, assist in bank deposits, inventory cost tracking, and payroll submission.
- Review fresh produce performance metrics (stock turn, wastage, margin per line) and propose improvement initiatives.
Compliance, Health & Safety:
- Ensure all sections of the store (especially the fresh produce area) comply with occupational health and food safety regulations, internal audits and supplier safety standards.
- Maintain a store environment that is safe, clean, and well-organised; respond promptly to hygiene incidents, spills, misplaced stock or equipment faults.
- Participate in store audits, review findings with the Store Manager, and ensure corrective actions are followed through.
Stakeholder & Supplier Communication:
- Assist in maintaining strong relationships with suppliers, especially fresh produce vendors; monitor supplier performance, negotiate terms and address service issues.
- Attend or contribute to regular store management meetings: report on fresh produce performance, store operational issues and suggest process improvements.
- Communicate effectively with head office/support office teams regarding store operational needs, fresh produce initiatives, pricing changes and inventory status.
