Chocolate and hazelnut has got to be one of the best combos in history. This classic combo is what makes up everyone’s favourite childhood spread, Nutella. Unfortunately the original Nutella is packed full of refined ingredients, so why not make your own that tastes just as delicious but is loaded with health benefits instead of funky ingredients you can’t even pronounce? Do you want to know something else that makes this recipe even more irresistible? It only requires three ingredients and minimal time, so get out that cacao and roast those hazelnuts because before you know it, you’ll be spreading your healthy homemade Nutella on everything from pancakes to seeded bread (or just eating it straight out of the jar, we won’t tell!).

Ingredients:

2 1/2 cups hazelnuts
3 tbsp raw cacao powder
3 tbsp (100ml) maple syrup*

Method:

Place the hazelnuts on a baking tray and bake at 180°C for about 10 minutes, or until lightly toasted.

Take them out of the oven and leave them to cool before placing on a clean tea towel.

Rub the hazelnuts with your hands to loosen the skins then add the peeled hazelnuts to a food processor, discarding the skins.

Blend the hazelnuts for about 5 minutes or until a creamy nut butter forms.

Pour the hazelnut butter into a clean bowl and slowly stir in the cacao powder.

Then do the same with the maple syrup, adding it in in small increments until everything is well combined.

Transfer to a jar and store in a cool dry place for up to two weeks (if you can make it last that long!).
