Prunes Ashlock

Prunes are dried plums. A plum is the fruit of the plum tree, a stone fruit tree in the genus Prunus (which also includes peaches, cherries, apricots and almonds). During harvest, fresh plums fall from the trees and are collected in blankets spread over the floor, then hot-air dried and steamed to soften. Ashlock prunes are deliciously sweet with a rich taste and sticky texture.

Ashlock prunes are a yummy, convenient snack food on their own, or also a great addition to both sweet and savoury recipes. Wrap a bunch of prunes in a honey wrap to include in the kids’ lunchboxes as a nourishing morning tea or snack. They can be lightly heated, stewed and combined with other fruits into a crumble or simply topped with yoghurt, nuts and seeds for a yummy breakfast or dessert. Include prunes in homemade muffins, cookies and loaves for a chewy, fruity addition. Add prunes to curries, soups and stews for a lovely sweet contrast to the warm, savoury flavours.
