Organic Black Turtle Beans


Black turtle beans are a wonderful pantry staple, not only for their versatility but also for their health attributes, providing important amounts of protein and dietary fibre. Their content of calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese and phosphorus all contribute to building and maintaining strong bones and supporting heart health. Black turtle beans are full of flavour and often used in veggie patties, salads, stews, salads and many Central American dishes. If you have traveled through Central America, you will see black turtle beans being served up on big plates alongside rice, veggies and meat or fish.


Before cooking black turtle beans, pre-soak them in water for approximately 12 hours in order to make their nutrients more accessible and to make the beans themselves more digestible. You will notice that black beans then double in size once cooked so use approximately ½ cup uncooked black turtle beans per serve. Black turtle beans are delicious in veggie patties, warming soups, salads, stews and Central American dishes, such as this yummy warming Black Bean Chilli w Cashew Cream. Once they have been soaked and lightly cooked, they blend well into a dip alongside other herbs and spices, or simply use them in burritos, tacos and Mexican or Buddha Bowls of whatever variety.
