Aniseed is the dried seed of an annual herb from the same family as parsley and carrot. Aniseed powder has a sweet aromatic scent with a distinctive liquorice flavour. The spiciness of the powder is similar to fennel. The ability of aniseed to counteract indigestion was well known to the Romans, who used to serve a special spiced aniseed cake after feasting. Aniseed can also be used as a remedy for respiratory problems.
Aniseed is used in many savoury and sweet dishes, including any recipe that calls for star anise, fennel or aniseed liquer to provide a lovely liquorice flavour. It is delicious in hot beverages, particularly after you have consumed a large meal and need a little assistance with digestion. Aniseed powder is also a wonderful addition to curries, soups, stews and stir-fries.
