5 Tips For Eating Organic On A Budget

Organic and affordable have become somewhat of an oxymoron in peoples’ minds. Yes, buying organic food can become expensive (more about why here) but it certainly doesn’t have to break the bank. Eating organic has so many upsides for your own health and the health of our planet so it’s definitely worth eating organic where possible.

Here are some tips on how to do that on a budget:

.

Eat Seasonally

When it comes to fresh produce, opt for whatever is in season at the time. When there’s greater availability of food, the costs will come down.

Eat Locally

Shop through your local farmers, artisan producers and butchers who have full transparency in their supply chain. Become friendly with your locals so you can learn more about the what, where, why and how of the food they’re offering.

Herb Garden

Grow Your Own

Grow your own fruit, veggies and herbs. There are so many ways to do this on a small or large scale, whether you live in a small city apartment or a huge lifestyle block. Kids love gardening too, and it’s a wonderful way to educate them about where food comes from, how to care for it and how to prepare it.

Buy In Bulk

Shopping at bulk wholefood stores can keep your costs down significantly. Think about all the additional costs associated with packaging and marketing foods that you find on the supermarket shelves. Refilling your own jars and containers from bulk bins is healthy for your pocket with the added bonus of being healthy for the planet by cutting out the need for unnecessary packaging.

.

Be Easy On Yourself

As much as you might want to, you can’t do it all! Eating organic, cooking from scratch, cutting out plastic… There’s a lot of ways you can improve your own health and look after our precious planet. Every small change makes a difference and you’re already worthy of 10 stars if you’re even eating some organic or cooking mostly from scratch. Keep at it!
